St Martin’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, in Marine City, dates back to the 18th century.

The church has been rebuilt twice on the same property. The second church was
dedicated in 1882 due to outgrowing the original church. The current church
was dedicated on February 15, 1925, with the help of parishioners, local
builders and school children. Wages ranged from 25 cents to 90 cents. On
February 11, 1945, the church was officially free of debt when they burned the
final note.

The Jerusalem Cross has two interesting symbolisms. The first refers to the
four smaller crosses for the four gospels – Mark, Mathew, Luke and John, and
the center cross for Jerusalem – the center of the world from where Christianity
was spread to the four quarters of the world. Another interpretation of the
symbol – the five wounds of Jesus: two in the feet, two in the hands (by the four
smaller crosses) and the wound in Jesus’ side of the heart (represented by the
larger cross).

Today, the church remains strong in devotion, blessing the sign of the cross –
setting forward steadfastness in faith, perseverance in good works and the
salvation of souls. May it be a comfort, defense and shield against all the fiery
darts of the enemy, may it deliver the world from the power of the devil, and all
who shall, for the Lord’s sake, come before this cross finding health of body and
soul.
